Sunset Sports
Remember when Curtis Road was a residential street? I do. I almost got hit by a car out there on my hand-me-down BMX bike, which the principal of Koelsch saw out her office window. She called me into her office the next day to ask me if I had told my parents. I lied and said yes. I felt guilty about that, but never as guilty as the time I prank called 911 after Kelly dared me to… You know how it was back then with dares… I don’t think I ever even told my parents about that either… I really didn’t get in a whole lot of trouble as a kid. Probably because I was a liar, and also because I was #3 out of 4 kids. Kelly and I were in the middle but he was the only boy so he was highly favored. I slipped under the radar most of the time. The only time I ever remember getting grounded was when I got caught watching The Simpsons. Little did they know I also watched 90210 when they weren’t home… pretty filthy stuff…
Back to the point, we lived off Poplar Street near Curtis and Fairview. On that corner was good ol’ Sunset Sports. Looks like it was there from 1993 to 2003. I only remember going there once, most likely against my will. No offense to Sunset Sports, but I’m not into that kinda stuff… you know, sports and outdoor gear. Bleh. I’m sure it was a fine establishment with that 'pre big box, pre Amazon, pre everything that’s wrong with everything today' vibe. Now I’m feeling bad for not liking it. But to be fair, I hated Circuit City and Ultimate Electronics even more… and don’t even get me started on Home Depot.
You may now be wondering if there were any stores I did like. Well, thanks for asking. I did have a few favorite stores in the mall. #1 favorite would be Ultimate Temptations, they had the best troll doll selection. #2 would be Six Star, they were very budget friendly and had the most random crap ever. #3 would be a tie between Claire's and the Deb. If I had to pick a favorite store outside the mall it would probably be the Grocery Outlet. OH WAIT! Eddy’s Bakery Outlet!!! Yes! That was my favorite store! You could get like a thousand fruit pies for like $2! Ok so basically I like cheap shittery, and food… Sunset Sports offered neither of those things. This is starting to sound like a bad review… It’s not, I know there are people out there who prefer wholesome recreation and a healthy lifestyle over trolls and fruit pies. None of those people are my friends, but they may like this week’s design.
