Tell Me More About Caldwell

Upon arriving at college, quite a few years ago, one of my new roommates introduced herself and said she was from Boise. I said “Oh, me too! What high school did you go to?” She replies, “Actually, I am from Caldwell.” ...Awkward...

Was I being judgy because she was from Caldwell? A little. But mostly I was put off by the fact that she would misrepresent herself like that. I mean seriously! Boise and Caldwell are not the same place! They don’t even touch! I guess I can’t blame her. If I was from Caldwell I’d probably lie too.

Growing up in Boise, the 2C seemed very far away. Heck, Eagle Rd. was the edge of town. My Dad worked as a salesman for Food Services of America and every year on my birthday I would skip school to make sales calls with him. His route was Nampa and Caldwell. It felt like going out of town. The farmland, the sugar beat factory, Nampa/Caldwell Blvd., Karcher Mall, the TRAFFIC! The time with my dad was great, but after a few years the journey to 2C wore on me, and a free lunch wasn’t enough to lure me into the rural abyss.

When I was in junior high, families were moving in droves to Meridian. When I was ready to buy my first house everyone said to check out Kuna. I got about halfway there and turned around. No thanks! The sprawl continued, and people were actually willingly moving to Nampa, including my parents. I cursed them in my mind every time I had to drive to their house. And now, it’s all about CALDWELL!?!?! People are raving about Caldwell! Apparently, it’s the new hot spot in the Treasure Valley. Bougie even. I mean, I guess good for Caldwell... or whatever.
