Scary Larry

On today’s installment of Boise OG's The More You Know... The most popular sticker design released last week was of the one and only Scary Larry. Did you know that there is a tomato variety named after him?

YES!!! It IS a family heirloom from the iconic Treasure Valley ice cream man, Scary Larry!

The perfect name for this indeterminate and wildly variable paste tomato. Everything from 6”x1” sausages to the fattest romas you’ve ever seen come off this plant. Very few seeds--excellent for canning. Idaho heirloom.

Tomatoes are native to northwestern South America and by at least 500 BC they had been domesticated and were being cultivated as far north as modern-day Mexico, enjoyed by Aztec and other civilizations. They spread to Europe and the Caribbean through the Spanish colonizers, where they became staple parts of the food culture in many European countries as well. Their circuitous journey brought them on a wild ride up to and including tagging along with Scary Larry in his ice cream truck!
