Been Here For A While
Thanks to Micron and Hewlett Packard, Boise has been called a “techy boomtown.” Seriously, Times magazine said something like that in 2014. I don’t know much about that. (I think I say that in just about every email.) But seriously, when it comes to technology, I for reals don’t know or care enough about it to even make up stuff. I had to Google what kind of disk was being featured in this week’s design because the only disk name I could think of was floppy disk. Well guess what? Not only are the big floppy disks called floppy discs but these smaller, non-floppy disks are also called floppy disks, and now I’m wondering what the difference is between disks and discs, but I also don’t care. But as my parents always reminded me, not everything is always about me… So here’s this:
Before the Apple store in the mall, you could get your computer and electronics fix at such big names as Ultimate Electronics, CompUSA, and Circuit City. Even Micron was in the PC game for a minute, I think...
Locally owned, RJM has been around on Overland for a long time, I just saw on Facebook that they are soon retiring. Congrats to them.
But probably my most favorite computer store that I actually never went in was that place on Orchard that sold computer parts as well as gargoyles. Genius pairing! Over time it seems they phased out the computer stuff and phased in more relevant products/services like body piercings, tattoos and stripper shoes. They invented business pivoting before Covid made pivoting cool. I don’t think they are still around unless they pivoted into something unrecognizable. Maybe a Mattress Firm or Vape shop.
It’s hard to find a good gargoyle, let alone a local one.
